Het is minder dan 10 jaar geleden dat medewerkers van het Amerikaanse Centers for Diseases Control en Preventie (CDC) de opkomst van nieuwe schimmelpathogenen voorspelden als een nieuw volksgezondheidsprobleem. Ondanks deze waarschuwing wordt het belang van mycologie en schimmelinfecties met betrekking tot de volksgezondheid buiten de VS grotendeels genegeerd.
